I’m slowly working my way through Asimov’s “Foundation” trilogy. This was written around 1950. It’s amazing seeing how much was borrowed from this by later works. Imperial Battle Cruisers - the opening scene of Star Wars (first movie) where the cruiser just keeps going and going … in foundation they discovered an abandoned imperial battle cruiser that was “2 miles long”. Nuclear-powered blasters (phasers), personal force fields. These show up a lot in Star Trek the Animated Series (yes, I watched that). Luke Skywalkers’s speeders. Warp travel. Galactic empires. And this was clearly written when Nuclear Power was being projected to be “power too cheap to meter”. “Nucleics” would power everything from blasters, personal shields, to space ships, to cities, to home appliances, to flying chairs to decorative personal auras. You can definitely see where people thought this was going if you watch the Jetsons or even look at Walt Disney’s “The world of tomorrow”. There may be something new under the sun, but the more I read the harder it seems to be to find it.
