kåta are wood and earth structures built by the Sami people in northern Sweden (and I presume Norway, Finland and Russia where they also live). These are impressive but simple structures. What would you do if you lived in a very harsh, cold environment and had very few building materials? The kåta is a sort of wood and earth teepee. I took shelter briefly in one on a high, coldish, windy plain. They are quite effective.
